This week has been the coolest ever! I’ve had the opportunity to shadow both dermatology and neurosurgery as well as work in the lab and learn new skills.
Shadowing during inpatient dermatology consults gave me a deeper understanding of the diverse career paths within the field. Additionally, observing tethered cord surgeries, a spinal fusion, pineal cyst removal, and trigeminal neuralgia surgery ranks among the top ten coolest experiences of my life.
Three weeks ago, I started the Gensemer hEDS Internship Program (HIP) at the Norris Lab and have been learning so much. It’s also the first time I’ve ever been well enough to live “away” from home which for a while I thought might never happen. All of the HIP interns also have hEDS which fosters such a strong level of empathy between us. What a cool idea to have students interested in research study their own condition!!
Being in the lab for the past three weeks has only made my curiosity and appreciation for research grow. I’d strongly encourage anyone with a personal connection to hEDS and a desire to work in healthcare or research as it relates to EDS to apply for this internship with the Norris Lab next summer.
