Where’s the “pause” button?
It’s a relief to be discharged from the hospital. Unfortunately, it doesn’t mean one is fully recovered or back to “their normal” prior to the admission. Even for short hospitalizations, it can be very mentally and physically challenging to shift so quickly from laying in a bed on a cocktail of medicines to the full speed of daily life.
This is especially true for patients with complex or chronic illnesses because we often are still experiencing many symptoms and significant pain even when sent home. But the societal expectations are to resume as you were, to jump right back into school or work. It’s a physical battle to climb back, let alone catch up to what was missed.
It seems we should have a “pause button”, right?
